Notes from the American Concrete Institute New England Chapter

Hello and Welcome!

My name is Jon Kuell and I am the Executive Director of the Northern New England Concrete Association (NNECA).  For the past sixteen years, I have been involved with the American Concrete Institute (ACI) primarily on the certification side.  NNECA has been the Local Sponsoring Group for ACI certifications in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island since 1987.   Throughout my time at NNECA, we have experienced explosive growth in our certification offerings, to the point that people assumed we represented ACI in the region.  And while we’ve done our best to be a resource for the New England concrete industry, ACI requires a separate and distinct organization to represent their interests in a geographical region.   The time has come to bring back an ACI chapter for New England.

Last fall I reached out to many of you to see if you would be in support of an ACI Chapter for New England.  I was surprised with both the swiftness and volume of response. I sent out the organizing petition at 7:00 am and by 11:00 am I had the required twenty-five endorsements from ACI members, and they continued to come in for the next two weeks.  A lot has happened since then, and I’m so pleased to introduce you to the new ACI New England Chapter.

In March, I travelled to Quebec City for the ACI Convention and for the ACI Chapter Roundtable.  I was accompanied by our President-elect Dr. R. Brett Holland of Simpson  Gumpertz & Heger and together we spent the day with chapter leaders from around the globe.  It was a great experience, and we learned a lot about what makes a chapter successful.  The number one thing that sets active and vibrant chapters apart is YOU!  Membership engagement is critical to our success in this new venture, and while I must temper my excitement for this new endeavor (like you, I have a full-time job to take care of) I am encouraged by the level of support and the flow of ideas to bring meaningful programming to you.

I am now pleased to formally invite all of you to join our new organization, ACI New England Chapter.  You can learn more about us at our newly-launched website, www.aci-ne.org.  I also encourage you to join us for our inaugural meeting on June 27th in Worcester, where we’ll be introducing ourselves to each other, catching up with some old friends, formerly electing our board, voting on our bylaws, establishing committee’s and committee members, and listening to what you want to see out of your local ACI Chapter.

I hope to meet you soon!

 Jon Kuell

Executive Director, ACI New England Chapter
